Love for Poetry - Analysis 6: Untitled by Us (Personal Poem)

This is an untitled poem revolving around Love. It questions Love's definition, and attempts to find out what Love is. Yet even after various tries, the poets fail to define Love, thus reinforcing the fact that Love is just something that cannot be understood practically.

The first thing one would notice in the poem, would be the nonexistence of its title. This is because Love is undefined. Different people, having different points of views, different emotions, and different characteristics, would define Love differently. Thus, there is no title for this poem, as this poem aims to define Love, yet appears to not have found any answer at the end.

One can see that the words in the poem are wildly scattered. This is because Love is an emotion that is not of one's free will. It is uncontrollable, something intangible. The weird placement of the words in the poem emphasises how Love runs wild and free. Some gaps are small, yet some gaps are huge, this is because there are many different kinds of Love, some of them include violent emotions and actions, like the huge gaps, yet some of them have gentle emotions and actions involved, represented by the small gaps.

The phrase "What is Love?" is constantly repeated at the beginning of each stanza, to reinforce the point of the poets constantly trying to find an answer on what Love is, yet being unable to find a satisfactory answer. There are many very different answers the poets came up with to define Love. This enforces the poets' confusion towards Love and how Love cannot be understood with a practical, realistic mindset. It also invites the readers to think along with them, and keeps the readers' minds churning while reading the poem.

Also, after each try of defining Love, for example, "A commitment?", one sees the poets defining their supposed definition of Love and questioning it yet again. This could be because the poets begin to realise Love cannot be defined and begin to doubt whether their supposed definitions were correct. This is obvious as the poets even define the definition they gave to Love, as if to make sure their definitions were absolutely correct, yet they add "Is it really..." to them, to show a sense of doubt and uneasiness to their own definitions of Love.

At the end of the poem, the poets decide to end with "What is Love?". This phrase lets the readers continue to wonder about the question even after the poem ends, and also keeps the poets' point that Love cannot be defined, because even after their numerous attempts on defining Love, they end up back in Square One, where they begin question yet again, just what Love is.
